Adult Faith Formation and Education in Christ the King Parish

We celebrated the Feast of Pentecost two weeks ago and there, the assembled “were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2.4). This action was a promise from Jesus Christ when he told them “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, [...] and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Mt 28, 19,20)

These words are spoken to us as well, in each and every age. But how do we become that follower of Christ, that disciple in our every day life, in today’s society, in this community, city or country? In order to answer that and many other questions we need to grow in our faith, in the knowledge and spirit of the faith into which we were baptized.

In our quest for renewal and growth as a parish community, faith formation and education needs to be a pillar of that journey. Christ the King Parish has a long history of involvement in adult faith formation and education. It is our desire to build on that tradition. A parish committee has come together to take steps to establish faith formation and education as one of the core foundations to deepening our faith and understanding of what it means to become and to live as a disciple of Christ.

Beginning on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 a faith formation and education program will be offered every Wednesday throughout the pastoral year. For 2017-2018 there will be 33 Wednesday programs touching on themes and subjects that are central to our faith and that deal with important questions of the day.

While a core program has been tentatively planned, (see survey in bulletin) it is also important to receive ongoing input from all parishioners regarding subjects to be addressed and the effectiveness of the formation and education program as we progress throughout the year.

The program for the coming year is but a beginning. As we move forward it will be important to consider how we, as a parish community, can further build on the coming year and offer programs during the day, encourage small faith communities in the homes as well as offer additional weekend programs such as Saturday retreats before Advent and Lent. As well it will be important for us to resume the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults or the RCIA program. That is, however, for another day.

For next year, we will concentrate on the Adult Faith Formation and Education Program on Wednesday nights. Before we finalize the program for the year we need, from all parishioners, two things. The first is a request for ALL parishioners to pray that the program we set is truly responding to the will of God and that it will bear much fruit. The second is to take the time to complete a very brief survey. That will greatly assist us in assuring that we are responding to your needs. Thank you on behalf of the Adult Faith Formation and Education Committee.
